In a World of Options: Braces or Invisalign?

At West Orthodontics, it’s our goal to put a straight and healthy smile on the faces of all of our patients in and around Meridian Township, Lansing, and DeWitt, MI. To accomplish this, Dr. Kristine West is proud to provide a wide variety of efficient orthodontic treatments, including our two most popular types, braces and Invisalign. Since the choice of treatment is generally between traditional braces and Invisalign, we’d like to help you make a more informed decision by providing you with some of the benefits of both of these treatment types.

Braces are the traditional form of orthodontic treatment that you’re probably most familiar with. This treatment is a time-tested and proven way of straightening a smile. With the utilization of metal brackets and wires, braces can gradually shift a patient’s teeth over time. If you choose braces as your orthodontic treatment, you’ll be privy to a host of benefits that include the following:

  • Braces are the most effective treatment for taking care of more complex orthodontic issues.
  • Braces are usually less expensive than other orthodontic treatments.
  • The braces will be cemented onto your teeth, meaning that you won’t have to worry about wearing them enough or forgetting about them.
  • Braces can come in many different types, including aesthetically pleasing variants, such as ceramic braces and lingual braces.

Instead of using metal wires and brackets to shift a patient’s teeth, Invisalign uses plastic aligners to straighten a smile. You’ll be given a series of aligner sets; each one will be worn for two weeks. As you move onto each new set, your teeth will gradually shift into a more favorable alignment. Here are some of the advantages that Invisalign will offer to patients who choose this orthodontic treatment:

  • Invisalign’s aligners are made of clear, polyurethane plastic, which means that your orthodontic treatment will be virtually invisible.
  • Since Invisalign is removable, you won’t have to worry about having to change your diet or restrict any foods; you just remove your aligners and eat what you like.
  • Because you can remove your orthodontics, keeping your teeth clean is as simple as ever.
  • The polyurethane plastic aligners provide more comfort for your mouth than the metal of braces.
  • The last set of aligners can actually double as a retainer as well.

Which Is the Best Choice?

Truthfully, there really is no ‘best’ choice. Both types of treatments have their own advantages that may be more helpful to one patient than another. It’s up to you to weigh the benefits of each treatment. However, as retention is a needed stage after the orthodontic treatment is completed, you always have the option of combining both: using braces as your orthodontic treatment and then using aligners as your retainer.
