metal bracesAs your trusted orthodontist and orthodontic team, we at West Orthodontics are proud to go above and beyond in order to offer a diverse selection of braces and other orthodontic treatments for those in and around DeWitt and Lansing, MI. While we take pride in our varied selection of braces and treatments, sometimes the most fitting option is also the classic – traditional metal braces. Metal braces offer an effective orthodontic treatment with many reasons as to why you’d want to select them.

Why Choose Metal Braces?

Metal braces are considered to be such a time-tested treatment because they offer an efficiency that you won’t get from other treatments at the orthodontist. These traditional braces are capable of treating more complex orthodontic problems while other treatments, such as Invisalign and ceramic braces, can’t. While it’s true that metal braces are more visible than these other treatments, modern-day metal braces have advanced technologically and are now smaller and more visually appealing than they’ve been in the past. If you’re interested, you can even pick what color you want your elastics to be, giving your braces a unique look.

How to Take Care of Your Metal Braces

While metal braces will eventually give you a great, new smile, you’ll have to put in a little extra work to get yourself to that point. This means taking care of your braces in addition to making sure that your oral hygiene is at its optimal level. We recommend doing the following to help ensure a successful orthodontic treatment:

  • Brush and Floss Regularly – While brushing twice a day is sufficient for most people, when you have braces, it’s important to brush four times a day – once after every meal and then again before you go to bed. This is because there are many nooks and crannies in braces that allow food particles to get trapped in. In order to make sure that your mouth is free of food particles and bacteria, you’ll want to brush your teeth several times a day. Don’t forget to floss as well!
  • Avoid Harmful Foods – Patients with braces will need to avoid consuming certain types of foods because they can potentially damage their orthodontics. These include hard foods, which can sometimes break the wires or brackets of your braces, and they also include sticky foods, which can tug on and loosen the wires and brackets.
  • Visit Your Dentist and Orthodontist – During your orthodontic treatment with traditional braces, you’ll still need to visit your dentist and orthodontist regularly. Your orthodontist will make sure that your treatment is progressing just as planned while your dentist will give your teeth a needed cleaning and a checkup to ensure that you don’t have any dental problems.
