Braces Can Work at Any Age
Posted on 10/19/2017

As your provider of a plethora of different orthodontic treatments, including Invisalign, kids braces, adult braces, and so much more, we at West Orthodontics want you to know that braces can work for patients of any age. Now, braces may be commonly thought of as an orthodontic treatment for teenagers – and that’s true; most patients who undergo orthodontics are teenagers or adolescents. However, braces are just as valuable for patients who are younger and also those who are older. We don’t ever want you to take age into consideration when it comes to your smile – just stop by our DeWitt, MI office and we’ll help you achieve your perfect smile, no matter your age!

Come in for an Early Visit!

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child’s first visit to the orthodontist should be at the age of seven. This is typically the age where a child’s adult molars erupt, giving your Lansing and DeWitt, MI orthodontist the first opportunity to examine your child’s front-to-back and side-to-side teeth relationships and also check for any orthodontic problems.

While many children start their orthodontic treatment during their adolescence, beginning treatment at this age can be beneficial for a few very important reasons. Undergoing early treatment and wearing kids braces at this time can actually end up preventing the need for more complex (and costly!) orthodontic treatments in the future. By taking care of an orthodontic problem at the earliest age possible, you’ll be able to keep it from getting worse.

You’re Never Too Old for Braces!

On the other end of the spectrum, you can never really be too old for braces either! While many patients may be teenagers, a growing number of adults are now starting to take advantage of all of the benefits that adult orthodontic treatment can provide. In fact, about 25 percent of all orthodontic patients nowadays are adults! Whether you’re interested in standard adult braces or a more discreet Invisalign treatment, your DeWitt and Lansing, MI orthodontist will be able to deliver the same great results.

The major difference between orthodontic treatment as a kid and as an adult lies in the health of the patient’s gums. Because an adult has lived longer (obviously!), he or she is more likely to have developed some kind of gum disease over the years. When a patient’s gum tissues aren’t healthy, bone loss can occur, which will weaken the long-term prognosis of the patient’s teeth. Because of this, it’s critical that any gum, or periodontal, disease is brought under control before orthodontic treatment can begin.
