Clear Braces vs. Invisalign
Posted on 03/15/2018

You’ll find a wide assortment of types of braces when you come visit your DeWitt and Lansing, MI orthodontist, Dr. Kristine West, here at West Orthodontics. However, two of our absolute favorites for our older patients are clear braces and Invisalign. Both of these have become popular among adults who are looking to improve their smile because of their ability to give a patient a discreet orthodontic treatment. Since they both offer the ability for a person to maintain an attractive and professional image during treatment, you may be wondering which one is better for you. We’d like to help you out by going over some of the pros and cons of both clear braces and Invisalign.

The Pros and Cons of Clear Braces

When compared to Invisalign, the major advantage of clear braces is that it uses the same basic system that metal braces do. Because of the treatment’s similarity to metal braces, they’re capable of moving teeth more efficiently, which can treat more complex orthodontic problems. Additionally, modern technologies have made clear braces more effective than ever as their brackets are now stronger, smaller, and less resistant to staining.

Some of the downsides of clear braces include the same problems that metal braces have: they’re not as comfortable, you’ll have to avoid certain foods, and cleaning your teeth can be more of a hassle. After all, clear braces are practically the same as metal braces, only with ceramic brackets instead. However, a drawback that’s unique to clear braces is that the ceramic brackets are more fragile than their metal counterparts, which can make them more susceptible to breaking during physical contact.

The Pros and Cons of Invisalign

As indicated by its name, Invisalign offers a treatment that’s practically invisible. The aligners are made of a clear, polyurethane plastic that will give a patient the most discreet treatment possible. While this is what the treatment is mainly known for, Invisalign brings with it a whole host of other advantages too. It’s more comfortable due to the lack of brackets and wires and it’s also more convenient. You won’t have to struggle to clean your teeth around brackets and wires and you won’t have to modify your diet just to accommodate your orthodontics.
A major disadvantage of Invisalign is that not all patients are suitable for this treatment. In many cases, a patient has an orthodontic condition that’s much too complex for Invisalign to handle. The reason for this is because the aligners just simply aren’t able to create some of the forces that are needed to correct some of the more severe orthodontic problems. In these situations, traditional braces will likely be needed instead.
