While we focus on preventive care, we offer a number of restorative dental treatments at our office, including dental crowns and bridges.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is like a "cap" that fits over a damaged tooth: it's a covering, usually made from metal or porcelain, that completely covers a damaged, decayed, or otherwise problematic tooth and provides both the strength and appearance of a normal tooth. Crowns are an excellent solution for repairing cavities, fixing a tooth that's cracked or has had multiple operations, or improving the appearance of the smile by covering discolored or otherwise unattractive teeth.

What Are Dental Bridges?Dental Bridgework - Step by Step.

Dental bridges are essentially the same as crowns in that they're "caps" that go over teeth, but instead of covering one tooth, they cover multiple and are used as a way to replace missing teeth. Usually, if one tooth is missing, a traditional bridge will use a crown for each tooth adjacent to the missing teeth – these are called "abutments" – and an attached crown between them to replace the missing tooth, called a "pontic." In addition to this normal construction, we also offer cantilever bridges, where both abutment teeth are on the same side of the pontic, and Maryland bridges, which use tooth-colored metal bands instead of crowns to hold the pontic tooth in place.

Materials for Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges may be made from a variety of different materials, each with unique benefits and advantages. Porcelain offers the most aesthetically appealing option, as it's white and can be color-treated to match the natural shade of your teeth. Typically we will use porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), which combines the durability of metal with the appearance of porcelain, or porcelain with zirconia, which offers a stronger form of ceramic.

The Treatment Process

Dental Crowns - Step by Step.Crowning or capping a tooth will usually take two to three visits. At the first visit, we will prepare your tooth to receive its new crown. First we will shape it to fit inside the new covering. This will involve some drilling to give the tooth a uniform shape. We will numb the tooth and the surrounding area beforehand. If there is very little tooth structure left to begin with, we may have to build up the tooth with filling material, rather than remove tooth structure, to support the crown.

After the tooth is prepared, we will take impressions of your teeth, either digitally or with reliable, putty-like impression materials, and send them to the dental laboratory. There, the impressions will be used to make models of your teeth for the creation of a crown. The models will serve as guides to the highly skilled lab technicians, who will ensure that your new crown is designed to enhance your smile and function well within your bite.

Before you leave the office, we will attach a temporary crown to your tooth to protect it until the permanent crown is ready. At the second visit, your permanent crown will be attached to your tooth with either a resin that hardens when exposed to a special light source, or a type of permanent cement.
