Invisalign® plastic aligners are a tooth straightening treatment often used in place of metal braces. This treatment is preferable for anyone who desires a more discreet way of straightening their teeth. While Invisalign produces fantastic results, it only works if the patient wears them at all times with few exceptions. When teeth are moving into the desired positions, it can be painful at times. Some teens with Invisalign may not want to wear their aligner as often as they should to avoid feeling discomfort. Busy adolescents who have Invisalign might forget to put their aligner back on after eating or may even forget to wear it at night. Invisalign Teen is specifically designed for teens who need an extra reminder to wear their aligner and avoid the temptation to remove it unnecessarily.

How Does Invisalign Teen Work?

Invisalign Teen works the same way as the normal Invisalign treatment to move teeth into the desired position, but it comes with an added feature. To remind teens to wear their aligner, Invisalign Teen has a blue compliance indicator to help the wearer keep track of how long they are wearing their aligner each day. This feature provides adolescents a visual reminder to wear their aligner regularly. Your San Anselmo orthodontist can show you in greater detail how the compliance indicator works. Invisalign should only be removed for eating, brushing teeth, cleaning the aligner, or special events. Otherwise, Invisalign aligners should be worn constantly to get the best results.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign Teen?

Other than the compliance indicator, Invisalign Teen offers the same benefits as the normal version of Invisalign.

Comfort: Compared to traditional metal braces, Invisalign provides far much more comfort as well as convenience. Traditional metal braces can be uncomfortable to have as they are metal brackets glued to the teeth. It is not uncommon for the wearer's lips to get caught in a bracket. Along with this, anyone with metal braces has to be careful with what they eat as certain foods may get caught in between the brackets and can even cause the metal wire to snap out of place. Over time the wire can also extend more to one side of the mouth, causing the pointy tip to jab the back of the wearer's cheek. With Invisalign, there is no possibility of certain pieces coming undone and easy removal allows the wearer to eat whatever they desire.

Improved oral health: Generally speaking, when teeth are crooked it is easier for bacteria to find its way into cracks and crevices causing decay. This means it is important for those with crooked teeth to undergo a straightening treatment. However, since metal braces are glued onto the teeth, this makes it impossible to clean that area for as long as the wearer has braces. The wire connecting all of the brackets together also gets in the way of brushing and flossing. Invisalign allows the freedom to completely remove the aligner and makes cleaning much more efficient.

Improved self-confidence: Smiling with Invisalign gives the wearer much more confidence than metal braces do. While there is nothing shameful about straightening your smile, it looks and feels more natural to smile without metal getting in the way.

Invisalign Teen is an easier and less painful method of straightening teeth than metal braces. The blue compliance indicator that comes built into Invisalign Teen will help the wearer keep track of how much time the aligner is worn daily. It is recommended that Invisalign Teen aligners be worn for 22-23 hours a day, which provides a two-hour window for eating, brushing teeth, and cleaning the aligner itself. The blue indicator also informs the wearer of when it is time for a new set of aligners.
